Great weekend for Rockets in NVL Shield Cup!

Nottingham Rockets Volleyball Club had a very successfully weekend in Volleyball England’s National Shield cup with both the Men’s and Women’s squad safely through to the next round.

The Women’s squad faced NVL team Wirral, a new team in Division 3 North this season and who we hope to be playing with in the National League next year. A young and talented squad, Wirral warmed up strongly and it was clear this was going to be a very close game. The first set was point for point and Rockets failed to capitulate on two set points allowing Wirral to take the set 30-28. In the second Wirral took the lead very quickly and Rockets struggled with court coverage, allowing Wirral to hit the wings repeatedly. The set eventually ran away from Rockets 25-15. In the third, Southglade finally turned the heating on which was good omen! Much improved passing from substitute Marta and the outside players allowed Nicole to consistently set the hitters, with Christin and Primrose in particular finding the floor at position 1 on several occasions. Rockets took the set 25-20 and then the next 28-26, which proved to be the crucial turning point for the girls who then blasted their way to an 8 point gap in the fifth and final set. Two stuff blocks from Christin finished off the game in style, final result: 3-2 victory for Nottingham Rockets (28-30, 15-25, 25-20, 28-26, 15-8)

Rockets Women now go on to face New Forest Ladies, who play in Division 2 South of the NVL. This will be at home on the 9th of Janaury.

Squad: Primrose Chiswo (C), Nicole Sparwasser, Marta Larraona-Puy, Christin Pelzel, Jo Langham, Sharon Nelis, Kate Rothery. Coach: Sian Lamb

MVPs: Sharon Nelis and Christin Pelzel

In their match, the Mens I had a relatively straightforward 3-0 victory against non NVL opponents Newmarket VC. Apparently the trip down south was well worth the effort for the post-match refreshments, let alone the victory! Rockets now face Super 8 side Coventry and Warwick Riga in the next round; a tough match against the only top division side in the shield competition and arguably the favourite to reach the finals in Kettering next year. This will be at home on the 8th of January, so please come down to Southglade to support them!

Final Result: 3-0 victory for Nottingham Rockets, 25-23, 25-21, 25-21

Squad: Carl Svensson (C), Owen Lamb, Michele Bavaro, Paul Scott, Ben Chouvion, Igor Lesanovsky, Mathias Droescher. Player/Coach: Paul Lamb
