Nottingham Rockets at the National Let’s Play Volleyball Festival!

In rainy conditions, Nottingham Rockets braved the elements this weekend at Volleyball England’s first National Let’s Play Volleyball festival. Based at the PGL centre at Caythorpe Court in Lincolnshire, the National Let’s Play Volleyball was a weekend of volleyball for young players including several day and night time activities led by the PGL staff. All players were housed on the centre with a great atmosphere! Unfortunately the rain delayed proceedings, but both Rockets teams finally got into action outside late Saturday afternoon, playing their final group matches in the evening sun (finally!).

The Under 13s team put in a great performance for their first ever competitive volleyball tournament and took 10th place in their group thanks to two victories over Ashfield 2. Strong serving made it tough for the Ashfield side to return the ball and Rockets edged victories on both Saturday and Sunday. Tougher matches against some very strong and much older Tameside teams were to follow but the Rockets side improved steadily throughout the weekend and with many years left to go in this competition (Daniel was one of the youngest players at the whole event!) they will definitely be one to watch over the next few years!

The U15 Rockets boys joined three teams from Chadwell Heath School and 2 teams from top  northern club Middlesborough & Acklam in an extremely competitive U15 competition with some big hits and even higher blocks. Rockets put in a very impressive performance, dispatching both Acklam teams and Chadwell Heath 2 & 3. Chadwell Heath 1, however, more than matched the Rockets team with both hitting power and some huge blocks and their two matches were arguably the matches of the tournament. Unfortunately Chadwell just edged the two victories, taking advantage of Rockets serving errors and finding open space between the defence. With two Under 16 players, the squad was ineligible for the main medals but received 50p Olympic coins and a photograph with the GB players to mark their second place!

The squads for the weekend were; U13s: Sian, Daniel & Rhia and U15 Boys: Ieuan, Nick, Greg and Sam. Well done to all the players!
