Rockets Juniors: National Champs Update

posted 23 Jan 2011, 05:05 by Web Admin
All 3 of the Nottingham Rockets Junior sides have been in action over the last two weekends, competing in the second round of the Volleyball England National Junior Championships. All were hoping for a spot in the Last Eights, where the top eight junior teams in the country play off for a place in the National Junior Final.
First up were the Under 18 Men, who hosted Team Northumbria, Bolton VC and Great Yarmouth & Gorleston VC in Nottingham. Both Bolton and Team Northumbria come from established club sides, with GYG being a relatively new entrant to the competition. Rockets sailed through in top spot, making them a firm favourite in February's last eights! The following weekend saw both the U16 Boys and U18 Women in action; the boys travelled to Kettering where they faced Boswells A, Wigan Seahawks and Middlesborough & Acklam. Boswells are a very strong London side and won the group confidently, yet Rockets played very strongly to take the second qualification spot. U18 and U16 squad member Ieuan Lamb has now also been selected to represent the England Cadet squad in Austria, a fantastic achievement and good luck Ieuan!
After winning their qualification group, Rockets U18 Women found themselves in a tough next round hosted by last years winners Tameside VC and with Nunthorpe Eagles and Wigan Seahawks. The girls played first against Tameside and put in a good performance taking 15 and 8 points from a very strong side. Next up were Wigan Seahawks, another young side who had been disappointed by losing to Nunthorpe. The first set went to Wigan 25-14, but Rockets showed excellent team spirit and fought back in the second winning 8 consecutive points to push Wigan to 24-24. Unfortunately nerves took over and Wigan took the victory, 25-14, 26-24. Against Nunthorpe, who well deservedly took the second qualification spot, Rockets struggled to maintain momentum and lost out 10-25, 8-25. Although disappointing to miss out on the last eights, being amongst the top 16 sides in the country is not bad!!
For the second year running, Rockets have both junior men's teams into the last Eights and a much improved performance from the girls squad to reach the top 16 teams in the country. With the vast majority of players still eligible to play next year, the junior section looks set to reach even higher heights! Congratulations to all the players and coaches involved.
