Rockets success at Volleyball England Annual Awards!

posted 5 May 2011, 05:40 by Web Admin

On Saturday the 16th of April, representatives of Nottingham Rockets Volleyball Club attended the Volleyball England Annual Awards at the National Volleyball Centre in Kettering. First of all they had the chance to watch a highly contested Men’s National Cup final between Leeds Carnegie and Sheffield, then moved on to a formal evening reception at the centre. The Volleyball England Annual Awards recognise the achievements of teams, players, coaches, referees and volunteers

The first Rockets award went to the Men’s NVL Squad, undefeated champions of the National League Division 3 North. A faultless season has promoted them up to Division 2 for 2011/2012 and we look forward to some high quality games at Southglade next year. In his first season at Rockets Michele Bavaro picked up the Most Valued Player of the Division; voted for by opposition teams, this award recognises the strongest performer in each game and hence the overall MVP for the season.

Next up were the coaching awards and Nottingham Rockets are delighted to announce that Women’s coach Sian Lamb was the winner of the Participation Coach of the Year Award. This is a fantastic achievement for Sian in her first full season of coaching at the club and one she thoroughly deserves. The award recognises Sian’s work in developing and encouraging players to reach their potential, especially her part in the continued successful growth of the ladies set up at Rockets. The squad hasn’t done too badly on the performance side either; this season Sian has coached the Women’s 1st team to a victory in the East Midlands league and a National Shield Semi Final and the Women’s 2nd team have risen up the table after 2 victories over Loughborough Students.

Finally came the Volleyball England Club of the Year Awards, in which Nottingham Rockets came a very credible 3rd place winning £100 for the club. The award was picked up by Club Chairman Jeff Goulbourne and Club Secretary James Ledger, representing the committee whose hard work over the last 2 years has led to this recognition. Rockets were praised for their social and welcoming atmosphere, for their family friendly attitude and for a busy programme of summer events and tournaments. Next year first place?!

Congratulations also go to Paul Lamb who was shortlisted in the prestigious Long Service Award, a category recognising volunteers who have given up considerable amounts of time over the last 10 years to Volleyball.

The evening was very enjoyable and we hope to be there next year with even more awards, mainly because we ran out of the winners’ bubbly this year!!
